How to Wash a Car

Man Washing Car

Washing your car regularly helps it keep its luster, but it’s important for so many reasons. For one, it protects your paint job and helps you control imperfections that are hard to detect. Read on for a thorough breakdown of how to wash your car and how often to wash your car, and if you’re looking for a deep cleaning near Ferry Pass, get in touch with our service department at a Sandy Automotive dealer near you.

Plan Ahead

Consider whether your vehicle is due to for a quick hose-down or a deep cleaning. If it’s new or recently waxed, it probably just needs a quick wash. If your vehicle has gone months without a wash and has been repeatedly exposed to the elements of Ferry Pass, it’s time for a deep cleaning.

Rinse & Wash

The first step of how to wash your car is to rinse it off to remove looser particles. Then, grab your car washing mitts and drying cloths and scrub it down more vigorously. Once you’ve finished with the chassis, grab some ammonia-free solution (one intended for car-use), and clean your car windows. Once you’re done with the windows, it’s time to move onto the rims and wheels. You’ll want to use a low-strength, acid-free pH balanced aluminum cleaner for your tires and your wheels.

Remove Bumps & Apply Compound

Next up, Cantonment drivers will want to smooth down any bumps created from tree sap or bird poop. Grab a clay bar and gently buff them away. Then, apply a dual-action polisher to smooth off stubborn grime or tiny scratches. We recommend applying 2-4 coats of your polisher compound.

Apply Polish (If Needed)

If your vehicle’s paint job is looking a little dull, you can apply a dull-action polisher to give it a sleek, eye-catching gloss. To apply it, use an orbital buffer or soft towel. Orbital buffers are faster and towels offer you more control.

Wax Your Car

Car wax both increases the shine of your vehicle and protects your paint job from UV light. We recommend carnauba or polymer waxes. Carnauba is cheaper than polymer, but it can take longer to set in and sometimes has a haziness to the tint.

How Often to Wash a Car

This can vary quite a bit. If you commute five days a week, you’ll want to wash your car every two weeks and wax it every six months. If you regularly drive it on county gravel roads, try to wash it every weekend. If you regularly go off-roading, be sure to wash it as soon as you get home.

How to Wash a Car: Tips

  • Cleaning Supplies: It may seem tempting to use dish or hand soap to wash your car, or your typical household glass cleaner, but you should only use soaps and cleaners specifically designed for cars.
  • Washing: Make sure to continually rinse your sponge, so that you aren’t cleaning your vehicle with dirty water.
  • Drying: Letting your car air-dry can cause swirl-marks. Use a terry towel or chamois to hand-dry it instead.
